1:1 クセルクセスの時代のことである。このクセルクセスは、インドからクシュに至るまで百二十七州の支配者であった。 1:2 そのころ、クセルクセス王は要塞の町スサで王位につき、 1:3 その治世の第三年に、酒宴を催し、大臣、家臣のことごとく、ペルシアとメディアの軍人、貴族および諸州の高官たちを招いた。 1:4 こうして王は、百八十日の長期にわたって自分の国がどれほど富み栄え、その威力がどれほど貴く輝かしいものであるかを示した。 1:5 それが終わると、王は七日間、酒宴を王宮の庭園で催し、要塞の町スサに住む者を皆、身分の上下を問わず招いた。 1:6 大理石の柱から柱へと紅白の組みひもが張り渡され、そこに純白の亜麻布、みごとな綿織物、紫の幔幕が一連の銀の輪によって掛けられていた。また、緑や白の大理石、真珠貝や黒曜石を使ったモザイクの床には、金や銀の長いすが並べられていた。 1:7 酒を供するための金の杯は一つ一つ趣を異にし、王室用のぶどう酒が、王の寛大さを示すにふさわしく、惜しげもなく振る舞われた。 1:8 しかし、定めによって酒を飲むことは強いられてはいなかった。王の命令によって給仕長たちは、人々に思いどおりにさせていたからである。 1:9 王妃ワシュティもクセルクセス王の宮殿で女のための酒宴を催していた
。1:10 七日目のことである。ぶどう酒で上機嫌になったクセルクセス王は、そば近く仕える宦官メフマン、ビゼタ、ハルボナ、ビグタ、アバグタ、ゼタル、カルカスの七人に命じて、 1:11 冠を着けた王妃ワシュティを召し出そうとした。その美しさを高官および列席する民に見せようというのである。王妃は美しい人であった。 1:12 ところが、王妃ワシュティは宦官の伝えた王の命令を拒み、来ようとしなかった。王は大いに機嫌を損ね、怒りに燃え、 1:13 経験を積んだ賢人たちに事を諮った。王の身辺の事柄はすべて、国の定めや裁きに通じている人々によって審議されることになっていた。 1:14 王は、王の側近で、王国の最高の地位にある、ペルシアとメディアの七人の大臣カルシェナ、シェタル、アドマタ、タルシシュ、メレス、マルセナ、メムカンを呼び寄せた。 1:15 「王妃ワシュティは、わたしが宦官によって伝えた命令に従わなかった。この場合、国の定めによれば王妃をどのように扱うべきか。」 1:16 メムカンが王と大臣一同に向かって言った。「王妃ワシュティのなさったことは、ただ王のみならず、国中のすべての高官、すべての民にとって都合の悪いことです。 1:17 この王妃の事件が知れ渡りますと、女たちは皆、『王妃ワシュティは王に召されても、お出ましにならなかった』と申して、夫を軽蔑の目で見るようになります。 1:18 今日この日にも、ペルシアとメディアの高官夫人たちは、この王妃の事件を聞いて、王にお仕えするすべての高官に向かってそう申すにちがいありません。何とも侮辱的で腹立たしいことです。 1:19 もしもお心に適いますなら、『ワシュティがクセルクセス王の前に出ることを禁ずる。王妃の位は、より優れた他の女に与える』との命令を王御自身お下しになり、これをペルシアとメディアの国法の中に書き込ませ、確定事項となさってはいかがでしょうか。 1:20 お出しになった勅令がこの大国の津々浦々に聞こえますと、女たちは皆、身分のいかんにかかわらず夫を敬うようになりましょう。」 1:21 王にも大臣たちにもこの発言は適切であると思われ、王はメムカンの言うとおりにした。 1:22 王は支配下のすべての州に勅書を送ったが、それは州ごとにその州の文字で、また、民族ごとにその民族の言語で書かれていた。すべての男子が自分の家の主人となり、自分の母国語で話せるようにとの計らいからであった。
[ 1 ] 1:1 Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus (this was the Ahasuerus who reigned over one hundred and twenty-seven provinces, from India to Ethiopia), 1:2 in those days when King Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom, which was in Shushan the citadel, 1:3 that in the third year of his reign he made a feast for all his officials and servants-the powers of Persia and Media, the nobles, and the princes of the provinces being before him- 1:4 when he showed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the splendor of his excellent majesty for many days, one hundred and eighty days in all. 1:5 And when these days were completed, the king made a feast lasting seven days for all the people who were present in Shushan the citadel, from great to small, in the court of the garden of the king's palace. 1:6 There were white and blue linen curtains fastened with cords of fine linen and purple on silver rods and marble pillars; and the couches were of gold and silver on a mosaic pavement of alabaster, turquoise, and white and black marble. 1:7 And they served drinks in golden vessels, each vessel being different from the other, with royal wine in abundance, according to the generosity of the king. 1:8 In accordance with the law, the drinking was not compulsory; for so the king had ordered all the officers of his household, that they should do according to each man's pleasure. 1:9 Queen Vashti also made a feast for the women in the royal palace which belonged to King Ahasuerus. 1:10 On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, seven eunuchs who served in the presence of King Ahasuerus, 1:11 to bring Queen Vashti before the king, wearing her royal crown, in order to show her beauty to the people and the officials, for she was beautiful to behold. 1:12 But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king's command brought by his eunuchs; therefore the king was furious, and his anger burned within him. 1:13 Then the king said to the wise men who understood the times (for this was the king's manner toward all who knew law and justice, 1:14 those closest to him being Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, who had access to the king's presence, and who ranked highest in the kingdom): 1:15 "What shall we do to Queen Vashti, according to law, because she did not obey the command of King Ahasuerus brought to her by the eunuchs?" 1:16 And Memucan answered before the king and the princes: "Queen Vashti has not only wronged the king, but also all the princes, and all the people who are in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus. 1:17 "For the queen's behavior will become known to all women, so that they will despise their husbands in their eyes, when they report, 'King Ahasuerus commanded Queen Vashti to be brought in before him, but she did not come.' 1:18 "This very day the noble ladies of Persia and Media will say to all the king's officials that they have heard of the behavior of the queen. Thus there will be excessive contempt and wrath. 1:19 "If it pleases the king, let a royal decree go out from him, and let it be recorded in the laws of the Persians and the Medes, so that it will not be altered, that Vashti shall come no more before King Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal position to another who is better than she. 1:20 "When the king's decree which he will make is proclaimed throughout all his empire (for it is great), all wives will honor their husbands, both great and small." 1:21 And the reply pleased the king and the princes, and the king did according to the word of Memucan. 1:22 Then he sent letters to all the king's provinces, to each province in its own script, and to every people in their own language, that each man should be master in his own house, and speak in the language of his own people.
10:17 ペトロが、今見た幻はいったい何だろうかと、ひとりで思案に暮れていると、コルネリウスから差し向けられた人々が、シモンの家を探し当てて門口に立ち、 10:18 声をかけて、「ペトロと呼ばれるシモンという方が、ここに泊まっておられますか」と尋ねた。 10:19 ペトロがなおも幻について考え込んでいると、“霊”がこう言った。「三人の者があなたを探しに来ている。 10:20 立って下に行き、ためらわないで一緒に出発しなさい。わたしがあの者たちをよこしたのだ。」 10:21 ペトロは、その人々のところへ降りて行って、「あなたがたが探しているのは、このわたしです。どうして、ここへ来られたのですか」と言った。 10:22 すると、彼らは言った。「百人隊長のコルネリウスは、正しい人で神を畏れ、すべてのユダヤ人に評判の良い人ですが、あなたを家に招いて話を聞くようにと、聖なる天使からお告げを受けたのです。」 10:23 それで、ペトロはその人たちを迎え入れ、泊まらせた。翌日、ペトロはそこをたち、彼らと出かけた。ヤッファの兄弟も何人か一緒に行った。 10:24 次の日、一行はカイサリアに到着した。コルネリウスは親類や親しい友人を呼び集めて待っていた。 10:25 ペトロが来ると、コルネリウスは迎えに出て、足もとにひれ伏して拝んだ。 10:26 ペトロは彼を起こして言った。「お立ちください。わたしもただの人間です。」 10:27 そして、話しながら家に入ってみると、大勢の人が集まっていたので、 10:28 彼らに言った。「あなたがたもご存じのとおり、ユダヤ人が外国人と交際したり、外国人を訪問したりすることは、律法で禁じられています。けれども、神はわたしに、どんな人をも清くない者とか、汚れている者とか言ってはならないと、お示しになりました。 10:29 それで、お招きを受けたとき、すぐ来たのです。お尋ねしますが、なぜ招いてくださったのですか。」 10:30 すると、コルネリウスが言った。「四日前の今ごろのことです。わたしが家で午後三時の祈りをしていますと、輝く服を着た人がわたしの前に立って、 10:31 言うのです。『コルネリウス、あなたの祈りは聞き入れられ、あなたの施しは神の前で覚えられた。 10:32 ヤッファに人を送って、ペトロと呼ばれるシモンを招きなさい。その人は、海岸にある革なめし職人シモンの家に泊まっている。』 10:33 それで、早速あなたのところに人を送ったのです。よくおいでくださいました。今わたしたちは皆、主があなたにお命じになったことを残らず聞こうとして、神の前にいるのです。」
10:17 Now while Peter wondered within himself what this vision which he had seen meant, behold, the men who had been sent from Cornelius had made inquiry for Simon's house, and stood before the gate. 10:18 And they called and asked whether Simon, whose surname was Peter, was lodging there. 10:19 While Peter thought about the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Behold, three men are seeking you. 10:20 "Arise therefore, go down and go with them, doubting nothing; for I have sent them." 10:21 Then Peter went down to the men who had been sent to him from Cornelius, and said, "Yes, I am he whom you seek. For what reason have you come?" 10:22 And they said, "Cornelius the centurion, a just man, one who fears God and has a good reputation among all the nation of the Jews, was divinely instructed by a holy angel to summon you to his house, and to hear words from you." 10:23 Then he invited them in and lodged them. On the next day Peter went away with them, and some brethren from Joppa accompanied him. 10:24 And the following day they entered Caesarea. Now Cornelius was waiting for them, and had called together his relatives and close friends. 10:25 As Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped him. 10:26 But Peter lifted him up, saying, "Stand up; I myself am also a man." 10:27 And as he talked with him, he went in and found many who had come together. 10:28 Then he said to them, "You know how unlawful it is for a Jewish man to keep company with or go to one of another nation. But God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean. 10:29 "Therefore I came without objection as soon as I was sent for. I ask, then, for what reason have you sent for me?" 10:30 So Cornelius said, "Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing, 10:31 "and said, 'Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your alms are remembered in the sight of God. 10:32 'Send therefore to Joppa and call Simon here, whose surname is Peter. He is lodging in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea. When he comes, he will speak to you.' 10:33 "So I sent to you immediately, and you have done well to come. Now therefore, we are all present before God, to hear all the things commanded you by God."
