18:1 イスラエルの王、エラの子ホシェアの治世第三年に、ユダの王アハズの子ヒゼキヤが王となった。 18:2 彼は二十五歳で王となり、二十九年間エルサレムで王位にあった。その母は名をアビといい、ゼカルヤの娘であった。 18:3 彼は、父祖ダビデが行ったように、主の目にかなう正しいことをことごとく行い、 18:4 聖なる高台を取り除き、石柱を打ち壊し、アシェラ像を切り倒し、モーセの造った青銅の蛇を打ち砕いた。イスラエルの人々は、このころまでこれをネフシュタンと呼んで、これに香をたいていたからである。 18:5 彼はイスラエルの神、主に依り頼んだ。その後ユダのすべての王の中で彼のような王はなく、また彼の前にもなかった。 18:6 彼は主を固く信頼し、主に背いて離れ去ることなく、主がモーセに授けられた戒めを守った。 18:7 主は彼と共におられ、彼が何を企てても成功した。彼はアッシリアの王に刃向かい、彼に服従しなかった。 18:8 彼はペリシテ人を、ガザとその領域まで、見張りの塔から砦の町まで攻撃した。 18:9 ヒゼキヤ王の治世第四年、イスラエルの王、エラの子ホシェアの治世第七年に、アッシリアの王シャルマナサルがサマリアに攻め上って来て、これを包囲し、 18:10 三年後に占領した。サマリアが占領されたのは、ヒゼキヤの治世第六年、イスラエルの王ホシェアの第九年であった。 18:11 アッシリアの王はイスラエル人を捕らえてアッシリアに連れて行き、ヘラ、ハボル、ゴザン川、メディアの町々にとどまらせた。 18:12 こうなったのは、彼らが自分たちの神、主の御声に聞き従わず、その契約と、主の僕モーセが命じたすべてのことを破ったからである。彼らは聞き従わず、実行しなかった。
18:13 ヒゼキヤ王の治世第十四年に、アッシリアの王センナケリブが攻め上り、ユダの砦の町をことごとく占領した。 18:14 ユダの王ヒゼキヤは、ラキシュにいるアッシリアの王に人を遣わし、「わたしは過ちを犯しました。どうかわたしのところから引き揚げてください。わたしは何を課せられても、御意向に沿う覚悟をしています」と言わせた。アッシリアの王はユダの王ヒゼキヤに銀三百キカルと金三十キカルを課した。 18:15 ヒゼキヤは主の神殿と王宮の宝物庫にあったすべての銀を贈った。 18:16 またこのときユダの王であるヒゼキヤは、自分が金で覆った主の神殿の扉と柱を切り取り、アッシリアの王に贈った。 18:17 アッシリアの王は、ラキシュからタルタン、ラブ・サリスおよびラブ・シャケを大軍と共にヒゼキヤ王のいるエルサレムに遣わした。彼らはエルサレムに上って来た。彼らは上って来て、布さらしの野に至る大通りに沿って上の貯水池から来る水路の傍らに立ち止まった。 18:18 彼らは王に呼びかけると、ヒルキヤの子である宮廷長エルヤキム、書記官シェブナ、アサフの子である補佐官ヨアが彼らの前に出て行った。 18:19 そこでラブ・シャケは彼らに言った。「ヒゼキヤに伝えよ。大王、アッシリアの王はこう言われる。なぜこんな頼りないものに頼っているのか。 18:20 ただ舌先だけの言葉が戦略であり戦力であると言うのか。今お前は誰を頼みにしてわたしに刃向かうのか。 18:21 今お前はエジプトというあの折れかけの葦の杖を頼みにしているが、それはだれでも寄りかかる者の手を刺し貫くだけだ。エジプトの王ファラオは自分を頼みとするすべての者にとってそのようになる。 18:22 お前たちは、『我々は我々の神、主に依り頼む』と言っているが、ヒゼキヤはユダとエルサレムに向かい、『エルサレムにあるこの祭壇の前で礼拝せよ』と言って、その主の聖なる高台と祭壇を取り除いたのではなかったか。 18:23 今わが主君、アッシリアの王とかけをせよ。もしお前の方でそれだけの乗り手を準備できるなら、こちらから二千頭の馬を与えよう。 18:24 戦車について、騎兵についてエジプトなどを頼みにしているお前に、どうしてわが主君の家臣のうちの最も小さい総督の一人すら追い返すことができようか。 18:25 わたしは今、主とかかわりなくこの所を滅ぼしに来たのだろうか。主がわたしに、『この地に向かって攻め上り、これを滅ぼせ』とお命じになったのだ。」 18:26 ヒルキヤの子エルヤキムとシェブナとヨアは、ラブ・シャケに願った。「僕どもはアラム語が分かります。どうぞアラム語でお話しください。城壁の上にいる民が聞いているところで、わたしどもにユダの言葉で話さないでください。」 18:27 だがラブ・シャケは彼らに言った。「わが主君がこれらのことを告げるためにわたしを遣わしたのは、お前の主君やお前のためだけだとでもいうのか。城壁の上に座っている者たちのためにも遣わしたのではないか。彼らもお前たちと共に自分の糞尿を飲み食いするようになるのだから。」 18:28 ラブ・シャケは立ってユダの言葉で大声で呼ばわり、こう言い放った。「大王、アッシリアの王の言葉を聞け。 18:29 王はこう言われる。『ヒゼキヤにだまされるな。彼はお前たちをわたしの手から救い出すことはできない。 18:30 ヒゼキヤはお前たちに、主が必ず我々を救い出してくださる、決してこの都がアッシリアの王の手に渡されることはない、と言って、主に依り頼ませようとするが、そうさせてはならない。』 18:31 ヒゼキヤの言うことを聞くな。アッシリアの王がこう言われるからだ。『わたしと和を結び、降伏せよ。そうすればお前たちは皆、自分のぶどうといちじくの実を食べ、自分の井戸の水を飲むことができる。 18:32 やがてわたしは来て、お前たちをお前たちの地と同じような地、穀物と新しいぶどう酒の地、パンとぶどう畑の地、オリーブと新鮮な油と蜜の地に連れて行く。こうしてお前たちは命を得、死なずに済む』と。ヒゼキヤの言うことを聞くな。彼は、主は我々を救い出してくださる、と言って、お前たちを惑わしているのだ。 18:33 諸国の神々は、それぞれ自分の地をアッシリア王の手から救い出すことができたであろうか。 18:34 ハマトやアルパドの神々はどこに行ったのか。セファルワイムやヘナやイワの神々はどこに行ったのか。サマリアをわたしの手から救い出した神があっただろうか。 18:35 国々のすべての神々のうち、どの神が自分の国をわたしの手から救い出したか。それでも主はエルサレムをわたしの手から救い出すと言うのか。」 18:36 しかし民は、答えてはならないと王に戒められていたので、押し黙ってひと言も答えなかった。 18:37 ヒルキヤの子である宮廷長エルヤキム、書記官シェブナ、アサフの子である補佐官ヨアは衣を裂き、ヒゼキヤのもとに来てラブ・シャケの言葉を伝えた。
18:1 Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea the son of Elah, king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz, king of Judah, began to reign. 18:2 He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Abi the daughter of Zechariah. 18:3 And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father David had done. 18:4 He removed the high places and broke the sacred pillars, cut down the wooden image and broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made; for until those days the children of Israel burned incense to it, and called it Nehushtan. 18:5 He trusted in the Lord God of Israel, so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor who were before him. 18:6 For he held fast to the Lord; he did not depart from following Him, but kept His commandments, which the Lord had commanded Moses. 18:7 The Lord was with him; he prospered wherever he went. And he rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not serve him. 18:8 He subdued the Philistines, as far as Gaza and its territory, from watchtower to fortified city. 18:9 Now it came to pass in the fourth year of King Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea the son of Elah, king of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria and besieged it. 18:10 And at the end of three years they took it. In the sixth year of Hezekiah, that is, the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken. 18:11 Then the king of Assyria carried Israel away captive to Assyria, and put them in Halah and by the Habor, the River of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes, 18:12 because they did not obey the voice of the Lord their God, but transgressed His covenant and all that Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded; and they would neither hear nor do them. 18:13 And in the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and took them. 18:14 Then Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria at Lachish, saying, "I have done wrong; turn away from me; whatever you impose on me I will pay." And the king of Assyria assessed Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold. 18:15 So Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the house of the Lord and in the treasuries of the king's house. 18:16 At that time Hezekiah stripped the gold from the doors of the temple of the Lord, and from the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria. 18:17 Then the king of Assyria sent the Tartan, the Rabsaris, and the Rabshakeh from Lachish, with a great army against Jerusalem, to King Hezekiah. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. When they had come up, they went and stood by the aqueduct from the upper pool, which was on the highway to the Fuller's Field. 18:18 And when they had called to the king, Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came out to them. 18:19 Then the Rabshakeh said to them, "Say now to Hezekiah, 'Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: "What confidence is this in which you trust? 18:20 "You speak of having plans and power for war; but they are mere words. And in whom do you trust, that you rebel against me? 18:21 "Now look! You are trusting in the staff of this broken reed, Egypt, on which if a man leans, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him. 18:22 "But if you say to me, 'We trust in the Lord our God,' is it not He whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and said to Judah and Jerusalem, 'You shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem'?" ' 18:23 "Now therefore, I urge you, give a pledge to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses-if you are able on your part to put riders on them! 18:24 "How then will you repel one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put your trust in Egypt for chariots and horsemen? 18:25 "Have I now come up without the Lord against this place to destroy it? The Lord said to me, 'Go up against this land, and destroy it.' " 18:26 Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, Shebna, and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, "Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it; and do not speak to us in Hebrew in the hearing of the people who are on the wall." 18:27 But the Rabshakeh said to them, "Has my master sent me to your master and to you to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, who will eat and drink their own waste with you?" 18:28 Then the Rabshakeh stood and called out with a loud voice in Hebrew, and spoke, saying, "Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria! 18:29 "Thus says the king: 'Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he shall not be able to deliver you from his hand; 18:30 'nor let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord, saying, "The Lord will surely deliver us; this city shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria." ' 18:31 "Do not listen to Hezekiah; for thus says the king of Assyria: 'Make peace with me by a present and come out to me; and every one of you eat from his own vine and every one from his own fig tree, and every one of you drink the waters of his own cistern; 18:32 'until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive groves and honey, that you may live and not die. But do not listen to Hezekiah, lest he persuade you, saying, "The Lord will deliver us." 18:33 'Has any of the gods of the nations at all delivered its land from the hand of the king of Assyria? 18:34 'Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim and Hena and Ivah? Indeed, have they delivered Samaria from my hand? 18:35 'Who among all the gods of the lands have delivered their countries from my hand, that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem from my hand?' " 18:36 But the people held their peace and answered him not a word; for the king's commandment was, "Do not answer him." 18:37 Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of the Rabshakeh.

18:38 ピラトは、こう言ってからもう一度、ユダヤ人たちの前に出て来て言った。「わたしはあの男に何の罪も見いだせない。 18:39 ところで、過越祭にはだれか一人をあなたたちに釈放するのが慣例になっている。あのユダヤ人の王を釈放してほしいか。」 18:40 すると、彼らは、「その男ではない。バラバを」と大声で言い返した。バラバは強盗であった。
18:28 Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. But they themselves did not go into the Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover. 18:29 Pilate then went out to them and said, "What accusation do you bring against this Man?" 18:30 They answered and said to him, "If He were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him up to you." 18:31 Then Pilate said to them, "You take Him and judge Him according to your law." Therefore the Jews said to him, "It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death," 18:32 that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which He spoke, signifying by what death He would die. 18:33 Then Pilate entered the Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" 18:34 Jesus answered him, "Are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning Me?" 18:35 Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?" 18:36 Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here." 18:37 Pilate therefore said to Him, "Are You a king then?" Jesus answered, "You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice." 18:38 Pilate said to Him, "What is truth?" And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, "I find no fault in Him at all. 18:39 "But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Do you therefore want me to release to you the King of the Jews?" 18:40 Then they all cried again, saying, "Not this Man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber.
