42:1 ヤコブは、エジプトに穀物があると知って、息子たちに、「どうしてお前たちは顔を見合わせてばかりいるのだ」と言い、更に、 42:2 「聞くところでは、エジプトには穀物があるというではないか。エジプトへ下って行って穀物を買ってきなさい。そうすれば、我々は死なずに生き延びることができるではないか」と言った。 42:3 そこでヨセフの十人の兄たちは、エジプトから穀物を買うために下って行った。 42:4 ヤコブはヨセフの弟ベニヤミンを兄たちに同行させなかった。何か不幸なことが彼の身に起こるといけないと思ったからであった。 42:5 イスラエルの息子たちは、他の人々に混じって穀物を買いに出かけた。カナン地方にも飢饉が襲っていたからである。 42:6 ところで、ヨセフはエジプトの司政者として、国民に穀物を販売する監督をしていた。ヨセフの兄たちは来て、地面にひれ伏し、ヨセフを拝した。 42:7 ヨセフは一目で兄たちだと気づいたが、そしらぬ振りをして厳しい口調で、「お前たちは、どこからやって来たのか」と問いかけた。彼らは答えた。「食糧を買うために、カナン地方からやって参りました。」 42:8 ヨセフは兄たちだと気づいていたが、兄たちはヨセフとは気づかなかった。 42:9 ヨセフは、そのとき、かつて兄たちについて見た夢を思い起こした。ヨセフは彼らに言った。「お前たちは回し者だ。この国の手薄な所を探りに来たにちがいない。」 42:10 彼らは答えた。「いいえ、御主君様。僕どもは食糧を買いに来ただけでございます。 42:11 わたしどもは皆、ある男の息子で、正直な人間でございます。僕どもは決して回し者などではありません。」 42:12 しかしヨセフが、「いや、お前たちはこの国の手薄な所を探りに来たにちがいない」と言うと、 42:13 彼らは答えた。「僕どもは、本当に十二人兄弟で、カナン地方に住むある男の息子たちでございます。末の弟は、今、父のもとにおりますが、もう一人は失いました。」 42:14 すると、ヨセフは言った。「お前たちは回し者だとわたしが言ったのは、そのことだ。 42:15 その点について、お前たちを試すことにする。ファラオの命にかけて言う。いちばん末の弟を、ここに来させよ。それまでは、お前たちをここから出すわけにはいかぬ。 42:16 お前たちのうち、だれか一人を行かせて、弟を連れて来い。それまでは、お前たちを監禁し、お前たちの言うことが本当かどうか試す。もしそのとおりでなかったら、ファラオの命にかけて言う。お前たちは間違いなく回し者だ。」 42:17 ヨセフは、こうして彼らを三日間、牢獄に監禁しておいた。 42:18 三日目になって、ヨセフは彼らに言った。「こうすれば、お前たちの命を助けてやろう。わたしは神を畏れる者だ。 42:19 お前たちが本当に正直な人間だというのなら、兄弟のうち一人だけを牢獄に監禁するから、ほかの者は皆、飢えているお前たちの家族のために穀物を持って帰り、 42:20 末の弟をここへ連れて来い。そうして、お前たちの言い分が確かめられたら、殺されはしない。」彼らは同意して、 42:21 互いに言った。「ああ、我々は弟のことで罰を受けているのだ。弟が我々に助けを求めたとき、あれほどの苦しみを見ながら、耳を貸そうともしなかった。それで、この苦しみが我々にふりかかった。」 42:22 すると、ルベンが答えた。「あのときわたしは、『あの子に悪いことをするな』と言ったではないか。お前たちは耳を貸そうともしなかった。だから、あの子の血の報いを受けるのだ。」 42:23 彼らはヨセフが聞いているのを知らなかった。ヨセフと兄弟たちの間に、通訳がいたからである。 42:24 ヨセフは彼らから遠ざかって泣いた。それからまた戻って来て、話をしたうえでシメオンを選び出し、彼らの見ている前で縛り上げた。 42:25 ヨセフは人々に命じて、兄たちの袋に穀物を詰め、支払った銀をめいめいの袋に返し、道中の食糧を与えるように指示し、そのとおり実行された。 42:26 彼らは穀物をろばに積んでそこを立ち去った。 42:27 途中の宿で、一人がろばに餌をやろうとして、自分の袋を開けてみると、袋の口のところに自分の銀があるのを見つけ、 42:28 ほかの兄弟たちに言った。「戻されているぞ、わたしの銀が。ほら、わたしの袋の中に。」みんなの者は驚き、互いに震えながら言った。「これは一体、どういうことだ。神が我々になさったことは。」 42:29 一行はカナン地方にいる父ヤコブのところへ帰って来て、自分たちの身に起こったことをすべて報告した。 42:30 「あの国の主君である人が、我々を厳しい口調で問い詰めて、この国を探りに来た回し者にちがいないと言うのです。 42:31 もちろん、我々は正直な人間で、決して回し者などではないと答えました。 42:32 我々が十二人兄弟で、一人の父の息子であり、一人は失いましたが、末の弟は今、カナンの地方に住む父のもとにいますと言ったところ、 42:33 あの国の主君である人が言いました。『では、お前たちが本当に正直な人間かどうかを、こうして確かめることにする。お前たち兄弟のうち、一人だけここに残し、飢えているお前たちの家族のために、穀物を持ち帰るがいい。 42:34 ただし、末の弟を必ずここへ連れて来るのだ。そうすれば、お前たちが回し者ではなく、正直な人間であることが分かるから、お前たちに兄弟を返し、自由にこの国に出入りできるようにしてやろう。』」 42:35 それから、彼らが袋を開けてみると、めいめいの袋の中にもそれぞれ自分の銀の包みが入っていた。彼らも父も、銀の包みを見て恐ろしくなった。 42:36 父ヤコブは息子たちに言った。「お前たちは、わたしから次々と子供を奪ってしまった。ヨセフを失い、シメオンも失った。その上ベニヤミンまでも取り上げるのか。みんなわたしを苦しめることばかりだ。」 42:37 ルベンは父に言った。「もしも、お父さんのところにベニヤミンを連れ帰らないようなことがあれば、わたしの二人の息子を殺してもかまいません。どうか、彼をわたしに任せてください。わたしが、必ずお父さんのところに連れ帰りますから。」 42:38 しかし、ヤコブは言った。「いや、この子だけは、お前たちと一緒に行かせるわけにはいかぬ。この子の兄は死んでしまい、残っているのは、この子だけではないか。お前たちの旅の途中で、何か不幸なことがこの子の身に起こりでもしたら、お前たちは、この白髪の父を、悲嘆のうちに陰府に下らせることになるのだ。」
42:1 When Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, Jacob said to his sons, "Why do you look at one another?" 42:2 And he said, "Indeed I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down to that place and buy for us there, that we may live and not die." 42:3 So Joseph's ten brothers went down to buy grain in Egypt. 42:4 But Jacob did not send Joseph's brother Benjamin with his brothers, for he said, "Lest some calamity befall him." 42:5 And the sons of Israel went to buy grain among those who journeyed, for the famine was in the land of Canaan. 42:6 Now Joseph was governor over the land; and it was he who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph's brothers came and bowed down before him with their faces to the earth. 42:7 Joseph saw his brothers and recognized them, but he acted as a stranger to them and spoke roughly to them. Then he said to them, "Where do you come from?" And they said, "From the land of Canaan to buy food." 42:8 So Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him. 42:9 Then Joseph remembered the dreams which he had dreamed about them, and said to them, "You are spies! You have come to see the nakedness of the land!" 42:10 And they said to him, "No, my lord, but your servants have come to buy food. 42:11 "We are all one man's sons; we are honest men; your servants are not spies." 42:12 But he said to them, "No, but you have come to see the nakedness of the land." 42:13 And they said, "Your servants are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and in fact, the youngest is with our father today, and one is no more." 42:14 But Joseph said to them, "It is as I spoke to you, saying, 'You are spies!' 42:15 "In this manner you shall be tested: By the life of Pharaoh, you shall not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here. 42:16 "Send one of you, and let him bring your brother; and you shall be kept in prison, that your words may be tested to see whether there is any truth in you; or else, by the life of Pharaoh, surely you are spies!" 42:17 So he put them all together in prison three days. 42:18 Then Joseph said to them the third day, "Do this and live, for I fear God: 42:19 "If you are honest men, let one of your brothers be confined to your prison house; but you, go and carry grain for the famine of your houses. 42:20 "And bring your youngest brother to me; so your words will be verified, and you shall not die." And they did so. 42:21 Then they said to one another, "We are truly guilty concerning our brother, for we saw the anguish of his soul when he pleaded with us, and we would not hear; therefore this distress has come upon us." 42:22 And Reuben answered them, saying, "Did I not speak to you, saying, 'Do not sin against the boy'; and you would not listen? Therefore behold, his blood is now required of us." 42:23 But they did not know that Joseph understood them, for he spoke to them through an interpreter. 42:24 And he turned himself away from them and wept. Then he returned to them again, and talked with them. And he took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes. 42:25 Then Joseph gave a command to fill their sacks with grain, to restore every man's money to his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. Thus he did for them. 42:26 So they loaded their donkeys with the grain and departed from there. 42:27 But as one of them opened his sack to give his donkey feed at the encampment, he saw his money; and there it was, in the mouth of his sack. 42:28 So he said to his brothers, "My money has been restored, and there it is, in my sack!" Then their hearts failed them and they were afraid, saying to one another, "What is this that God has done to us?" 42:29 Then they went to Jacob their father in the land of Canaan and told him all that had happened to them, saying: 42:30 "The man who is lord of the land spoke roughly to us, and took us for spies of the country. 42:31 "But we said to him, 'We are honest men; we are not spies. 42:32 'We are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is no more, and the youngest is with our father this day in the land of Canaan.' 42:33 "Then the man, the lord of the country, said to us, 'By this I will know that you are honest men: Leave one of your brothers here with me, take food for the famine of your households, and be gone. 42:34 'And bring your youngest brother to me; so I shall know that you are not spies, but that you are honest men. I will grant your brother to you, and you may trade in the land.' " 42:35 Then it happened as they emptied their sacks, that surprisingly each man's bundle of money was in his sack; and when they and their father saw the bundles of money, they were afraid. 42:36 And Jacob their father said to them, "You have bereaved me: Joseph is no more, Simeon is no more, and you want to take Benjamin. All these things are against me." 42:37 Then Reuben spoke to his father, saying, "Kill my two sons if I do not bring him back to you; put him in my hands, and I will bring him back to you." 42:38 But he said, "My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead, and he is left alone. If any calamity should befall him along the way in which you go, then you would bring down my gray hair with sorrow to the grave."
38:1 【賛歌。ダビデの詩。記念。】 38:2 主よ、怒ってわたしを責めないでください。憤って懲らしめないでください。 38:3 あなたの矢はわたしを射抜き／御手はわたしを押さえつけています。 38:4 わたしの肉にはまともなところもありません／あなたが激しく憤られたからです。骨にも安らぎがありません／わたしが過ちを犯したからです。 38:5 わたしの罪悪は頭を越えるほどになり／耐え難い重荷となっています。 38:6 負わされた傷は膿んで悪臭を放ちます／わたしが愚かな行いをしたからです。 38:7 わたしは身を屈め、深くうなだれ／一日中、嘆きつつ歩きます。 38:8 腰はただれに覆われています。わたしの肉にはまともなところもありません。 38:9 もう立てないほど打ち砕かれ／心は呻き、うなり声をあげるだけです。 38:10 わたしの主よ、わたしの願いはすべて御前にあり／嘆きもあなたには隠されていません。 38:11 心は動転し、力はわたしを見捨て／目の光もまた、去りました。 38:12 疫病にかかったわたしを／愛する者も友も避けて立ち／わたしに近い者も、遠く離れて立ちます。 38:13 わたしの命をねらう者は罠を仕掛けます。わたしに災いを望む者は／欺こう、破滅させよう、と決めて／一日中それを口にしています。 38:14 わたしの耳は聞こえないかのように／聞こうとしません。口は話せないかのように、開こうとしません。 38:15 わたしは聞くことのできない者／口に抗議する力もない者となりました。 38:16 主よ、わたしはなお、あなたを待ち望みます。わたしの主よ、わたしの神よ／御自身でわたしに答えてください。 38:17 わたしは願いました／「わたしの足がよろめくことのないように／彼らがそれを喜んで／尊大にふるまうことがないように」と。 38:18 わたしは今や、倒れそうになっています。苦痛を与えるものが常にわたしの前にあり 38:19 わたしは自分の罪悪を言い表そうとして／犯した過ちのゆえに苦悩しています。 38:20 わたしの敵は強大になり／わたしを憎む者らは偽りを重ね 38:21 善意に悪意をもってこたえます。わたしは彼らの幸いを願うのに／彼らは敵対するのです。 38:22 主よ、わたしを見捨てないでください。わたしの神よ、遠く離れないでください。 38:23 わたしの救い、わたしの主よ／すぐにわたしを助けてください。
