7:1 イスラエルの人々は、滅ぼし尽くしてささげるべきことに対して不誠実であった。ユダ族に属し、彼の父はカルミ、祖父はザブディ、更にゼラへとさかのぼるアカンは、滅ぼし尽くしてささげるべきものの一部を盗み取った。主はそこで、イスラエルの人々に対して激しく憤られた。 7:2 ヨシュアはエリコからアイへ数人の人を遣わし、「上って行って、あの土地を探れ」と命じた。アイはベテルの東、ベト・アベンの近くにあった。彼らは上って行ってアイを探り、 7:3 ヨシュアのもとに帰って来て言った。「アイを撃つのに全軍が出撃するには及びません。二、三千人が行けばいいでしょう。取るに足りぬ相手ですから、全軍をつぎ込むことはありません。」 7:4 そこで、民のうちから約三千の兵がアイに攻め上ったが、彼らはアイの兵士の前に敗退した。 7:5 アイの兵士は、城門を出て石切り場まで追跡し、下り坂のところで彼らを撃ち、おおよそ三十六人を殺した。民の心は挫け、水のようになった。 7:6 ヨシュアは衣服を引き裂き、イスラエルの長老たちと共に、主の箱の前で夕方まで地にひれ伏し、頭に塵をかぶった。 7:7 ヨシュアは神に言った。「ああ、わが神、主よ。なぜ、あなたはこの民にヨルダン川を渡らせたのですか。わたしたちをアモリ人の手に渡して滅ぼすおつもりだったのですか。わたしたちはヨルダン川の向こうにとどまることで満足していたのです。 7:8 主よ、イスラエルが敵に背を向けて逃げ帰った今となって、わたしは何と言えばいいのでしょう。 7:9 カナン人やこの土地の住民は、このことを聞いたなら、わたしたちを攻め囲んで皆殺しにし、わたしたちの名を地から断ってしまうでしょう。あなたは、御自分の偉大な御名のゆえに、何をしてくださるのですか。」 7:10 主はヨシュアに言われた。「立ちなさい。なぜ、そのようにひれ伏しているのか。 7:11 イスラエルは罪を犯し、わたしが命じた契約を破り、滅ぼし尽くしてささげるべきものの一部を盗み取り、ごまかして自分のものにした。 7:12 だから、イスラエルの人々は、敵に立ち向かうことができず、敵に背を向けて逃げ、滅ぼし尽くされるべきものとなってしまった。もし、あなたたちの間から滅ぼし尽くすべきものを一掃しないなら、わたしは、もはやあなたたちと共にいない。 7:13 立って民を清め、『明日に備えて自分を聖別せよ』と命じなさい。イスラエルの神、主が、『イスラエルよ、あなたたちの中に滅ぼし尽くすべきものが残っている。それを除き去るまでは敵に立ち向かうことはできない』と言われるからである。 7:14 明日の朝、あなたたちは部族ごとに進み出なさい。主の指摘を受けた部族は、氏族ごとに進み出なさい。主の指摘を受けた氏族は、家族ごとに進み出なさい。主の指摘を受けた家族の男子は、一人ずつ進み出なさい。 7:15 滅ぼし尽くすべきものを持つ者がこうして、指摘されたなら、その人は財産もろとも火で焼き尽くされねばならない。彼は主の契約を破り、イスラエルにおいては愚かなことをしたからである。」 7:16 翌朝、ヨシュアは早く起き、イスラエルを部族ごとに進み出させると、ユダ族が指摘を受けた。 7:17 ユダの諸氏族を進み出させると、ゼラの氏族が指摘を受けた。ゼラの氏族の男子を一人ずつ進み出させると、ザブディ家が指摘を受けた。 7:18 ザブディ家の男子を一人ずつ進み出させると、ユダ族のゼラ氏族に属するザブディ家のカルミの子アカンが指摘を受けた。 7:19 ヨシュアがアカンに、「わたしの子よ。イスラエルの神、主に栄光を帰し、主をほめたたえ、あなたが何をしたのか包み隠さずわたしに告げなさい」と言うと、 7:20 アカンはヨシュアに答えた。「わたしは、確かにイスラエルの神、主に罪を犯しました。わたしがしたことはこうです。 7:21 分捕り物の中に一枚の美しいシンアルの上着、銀二百シェケル、重さ五十シェケルの金の延べ板があるのを見て、欲しくなって取りました。今それらは、わたしの天幕の地下に銀を下に敷いて埋めてあります。」 7:22 ヨシュアの出した使いたちがアカンの天幕に走って行って見ると、果たして彼の天幕の中に、銀を下に敷いて地下に埋めてあった。 7:23 彼らはそれを天幕から取り出して、ヨシュアとイスラエルのすべての人々のもとに運び、主の前にひろげた。 7:24 ヨシュアはゼラの子アカンはもとより、銀、上着、金の延べ板、更に息子、娘、牛、ろば、羊、天幕、彼の全財産を取り押さえ、全イスラエルを率いてアコルの谷にそれらを運び、 7:25 こう宣言した。「お前は何という災いを我々にもたらしたことか。今日は、主がお前に災いをもたらされる（アカル）。」全イスラエルはアカンに石を激しく投げつけ、彼のものを火に焼き、家族を石で打ち殺した。 7:26 彼らは、アカンの上に大きな石塚を積み上げたが、それは今日まで残っている。主の激しい怒りはこうしてやんだ。このようなわけで、その場所の名はアコルの谷と呼ばれ、今日に至っている。
7:1 But the children of Israel committed a trespass regarding the accursed things, for Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed things; so the anger of the Lord burned against the children of Israel. 7:2 Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth Aven, on the east side of Bethel, and spoke to them, saying, "Go up and spy out the country." So the men went up and spied out Ai. 7:3 And they returned to Joshua and said to him, "Do not let all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and attack Ai. Do not weary all the people there, for the people of Ai are few." 7:4 So about three thousand men went up there from the people, but they fled before the men of Ai. 7:5 And the men of Ai struck down about thirty-six men, for they chased them from before the gate as far as Shebarim, and struck them down on the descent; therefore the hearts of the people melted and became like water. 7:6 Then Joshua tore his clothes, and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the Lord until evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust on their heads. 7:7 And Joshua said, "Alas, Lord God, why have You brought this people over the Jordan at all-to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? Oh, that we had been content, and dwelt on the other side of the Jordan! 7:8 "O Lord, what shall I say when Israel turns its back before its enemies? 7:9 "For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear it, and surround us, and cut off our name from the earth. Then what will You do for Your great name?" 7:10 So the Lord said to Joshua: "Get up! Why do you lie thus on your face? 7:11 "Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. For they have even taken some of the accursed things, and have both stolen and deceived; and they have also put it among their own stuff. 7:12 "Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they have become doomed to destruction. Neither will I be with you anymore, unless you destroy the accursed from among you. 7:13 "Get up, sanctify the people, and say, 'Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, because thus says the Lord God of Israel: "There is an accursed thing in your midst, O Israel; you cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the accursed thing from among you." 7:14 'In the morning therefore you shall be brought according to your tribes. And it shall be that the tribe which the Lord takes shall come according to families; and the family which the Lord takes shall come by households; and the household which the Lord takes shall come man by man. 7:15 'Then it shall be that he who is taken with the accursed thing shall be burned with fire, he and all that he has, because he has transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and because he has done a disgraceful thing in Israel.' " 7:16 So Joshua rose early in the morning and brought Israel by their tribes, and the tribe of Judah was taken. 7:17 He brought the clan of Judah, and he took the family of the Zarhites; and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man, and Zabdi was taken. 7:18 Then he brought his household man by man, and Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken. 7:19 Now Joshua said to Achan, "My son, I beg you, give glory to the Lord God of Israel, and make confession to Him, and tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me." 7:20 And Achan answered Joshua and said, "Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and this is what I have done: 7:21 "When I saw among the spoils a beautiful Babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. And there they are, hidden in the earth in the midst of my tent, with the silver under it." 7:22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and there it was, hidden in his tent, with the silver under it. 7:23 And they took them from the midst of the tent, brought them to Joshua and to all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the Lord. 7:24 Then Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the garment, the wedge of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and all that he had, and they brought them to the Valley of Achor. 7:25 And Joshua said, "Why have you troubled us? The Lord will trouble you this day." So all Israel stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire after they had stoned them with stones. 7:26 Then they raised over him a great heap of stones, still there to this day. So the Lord turned from the fierceness of His anger. Therefore the name of that place has been called the Valley of Achor to this day.
