37:1 ヤコブは、父がかつて滞在していたカナン地方に住んでいた。 37:2 ヤコブの家族の由来は次のとおりである。ヨセフは十七歳のとき、兄たちと羊の群れを飼っていた。まだ若く、父の側女ビルハやジルパの子供たちと一緒にいた。ヨセフは兄たちのことを父に告げ口した。 37:3 イスラエルは、ヨセフが年寄り子であったので、どの息子よりもかわいがり、彼には裾の長い晴れ着を作ってやった。 37:4 兄たちは、父がどの兄弟よりもヨセフをかわいがるのを見て、ヨセフを憎み、穏やかに話すこともできなかった。 37:5 ヨセフは夢を見て、それを兄たちに語ったので、彼らはますます憎むようになった。 37:6 ヨセフは言った。「聞いてください。わたしはこんな夢を見ました。 37:7 畑でわたしたちが束を結わえていると、いきなりわたしの束が起き上がり、まっすぐに立ったのです。すると、兄さんたちの束が周りに集まって来て、わたしの束にひれ伏しました。」 37:8 兄たちはヨセフに言った。「なに、お前が我々の王になるというのか。お前が我々を支配するというのか。」兄たちは夢とその言葉のために、ヨセフをますます憎んだ。 37:9 ヨセフはまた別の夢を見て、それを兄たちに話した。「わたしはまた夢を見ました。太陽と月と十一の星がわたしにひれ伏しているのです。」 37:10 今度は兄たちだけでなく、父にも話した。父はヨセフを叱って言った。「一体どういうことだ、お前が見たその夢は。わたしもお母さんも兄さんたちも、お前の前に行って、地面にひれ伏すというのか。」 37:11 兄たちはヨセフをねたんだが、父はこのことを心に留めた。
37:12 兄たちが出かけて行き、シケムで父の羊の群れを飼っていたとき、 37:13 イスラエルはヨセフに言った。「兄さんたちはシケムで羊を飼っているはずだ。お前を彼らのところへやりたいのだが。」「はい、分かりました」とヨセフが答えると、 37:14 更にこう言った。「では、早速出かけて、兄さんたちが元気にやっているか、羊の群れも無事か見届けて、様子を知らせてくれないか。」父はヨセフをヘブロンの谷から送り出した。ヨセフがシケムに着き、 37:15 野原をさまよっていると、一人の人に出会った。その人はヨセフに尋ねた。「何を探しているのかね。」 37:16 「兄たちを探しているのです。どこで羊の群れを飼っているか教えてください。」ヨセフがこう言うと、 37:17 その人は答えた。「もうここをたってしまった。ドタンへ行こう、と言っていたのを聞いたが。」ヨセフは兄たちの後を追って行き、ドタンで一行を見つけた。 37:18 兄たちは、はるか遠くの方にヨセフの姿を認めると、まだ近づいて来ないうちに、ヨセフを殺してしまおうとたくらみ、 37:19 相談した。「おい、向こうから例の夢見るお方がやって来る。 37:20 さあ、今だ。あれを殺して、穴の一つに投げ込もう。後は、野獣に食われたと言えばよい。あれの夢がどうなるか、見てやろう。」 37:21 ルベンはこれを聞いて、ヨセフを彼らの手から助け出そうとして、言った。「命まで取るのはよそう。」 37:22 ルベンは続けて言った。「血を流してはならない。荒れ野のこの穴に投げ入れよう。手を下してはならない。」ルベンは、ヨセフを彼らの手から助け出して、父のもとへ帰したかったのである。 37:23 ヨセフがやって来ると、兄たちはヨセフが着ていた着物、裾の長い晴れ着をはぎ取り、 37:24 彼を捕らえて、穴に投げ込んだ。その穴は空で水はなかった。 37:25 彼らはそれから、腰を下ろして食事を始めたが、ふと目を上げると、イシュマエル人の隊商がギレアドの方からやって来るのが見えた。らくだに樹脂、乳香、没薬を積んで、エジプトに下って行こうとしているところであった。 37:26 ユダは兄弟たちに言った。「弟を殺して、その血を覆っても、何の得にもならない。 37:27 それより、あのイシュマエル人に売ろうではないか。弟に手をかけるのはよそう。あれだって、肉親の弟だから。」兄弟たちは、これを聞き入れた。 37:28 ところが、その間にミディアン人の商人たちが通りかかって、ヨセフを穴から引き上げ、銀二十枚でイシュマエル人に売ったので、彼らはヨセフをエジプトに連れて行ってしまった。 37:29 ルベンが穴のところに戻ってみると、意外にも穴の中にヨセフはいなかった。ルベンは自分の衣を引き裂き、 37:30 兄弟たちのところへ帰り、「あの子がいない。わたしは、このわたしは、どうしたらいいのか」と言った。 37:31 兄弟たちはヨセフの着物を拾い上げ、雄山羊を殺してその血に着物を浸した。 37:32 彼らはそれから、裾の長い晴れ着を父のもとへ送り届け、「これを見つけましたが、あなたの息子の着物かどうか、お調べになってください」と言わせた。 37:33 父は、それを調べて言った。「あの子の着物だ。野獣に食われたのだ。ああ、ヨセフはかみ裂かれてしまったのだ。」 37:34 ヤコブは自分の衣を引き裂き、粗布を腰にまとい、幾日もその子のために嘆き悲しんだ。 37:35 息子や娘たちが皆やって来て、慰めようとしたが、ヤコブは慰められることを拒んだ。「ああ、わたしもあの子のところへ、嘆きながら陰府へ下って行こう。」父はこう言って、ヨセフのために泣いた。 37:36 一方、メダンの人たちがエジプトへ売ったヨセフは、ファラオの宮廷の役人で、侍従長であったポティファルのものとなった。
37:1 Now Jacob dwelt in the land where his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan. 37:2 This is the history of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers. And the lad was with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives; and Joseph brought a bad report of them to his father. 37:3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age. Also he made him a tunic of many colors. 37:4 But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peaceably to him. 37:5 Now Joseph had a dream, and he told it to his brothers; and they hated him even more. 37:6 So he said to them, "Please hear this dream which I have dreamed: 37:7 "There we were, binding sheaves in the field. Then behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and indeed your sheaves stood all around and bowed down to my sheaf." 37:8 And his brothers said to him, "Shall you indeed reign over us? Or shall you indeed have dominion over us?" So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words. 37:9 Then he dreamed still another dream and told it to his brothers, and said, "Look, I have dreamed another dream. And this time, the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars bowed down to me." 37:10 So he told it to his father and his brothers; and his father rebuked him and said to him, "What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall your mother and I and your brothers indeed come to bow down to the earth before you?" 37:11 And his brothers envied him, but his father kept the matter in mind. 37:12 Then his brothers went to feed their father's flock in Shechem. 37:13 And Israel said to Joseph, "Are not your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem? Come, I will send you to them." So he said to him, "Here I am." 37:14 Then he said to him, "Please go and see if it is well with your brothers and well with the flocks, and bring back word to me." So he sent him out of the Valley of Hebron, and he went to Shechem. 37:15 Now a certain man found him, and there he was, wandering in the field. And the man asked him, saying, "What are you seeking?" 37:16 So he said, "I am seeking my brothers. Please tell me where they are feeding their flocks." 37:17 And the man said, "They have departed from here, for I heard them say, 'Let us go to Dothan.' " So Joseph went after his brothers and found them in Dothan. 37:18 Now when they saw him afar off, even before he came near them, they conspired against him to kill him. 37:19 Then they said to one another, "Look, this dreamer is coming! 37:20 "Come therefore, let us now kill him and cast him into some pit; and we shall say, 'Some wild beast has devoured him.' We shall see what will become of his dreams!" 37:21 But Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands, and said, "Let us not kill him." 37:22 And Reuben said to them, "Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit which is in the wilderness, and do not lay a hand on him"-that he might deliver him out of their hands, and bring him back to his father. 37:23 So it came to pass, when Joseph had come to his brothers, that they stripped Joseph of his tunic, the tunic of many colors that was on him. 37:24 Then they took him and cast him into a pit. And the pit was empty; there was no water in it. 37:25 And they sat down to eat a meal. Then they lifted their eyes and looked, and there was a company of Ishmaelites, coming from Gilead with their camels, bearing spices, balm, and myrrh, on their way to carry them down to Egypt. 37:26 So Judah said to his brothers, "What profit is there if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? 37:27 "Come and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother and our flesh." And his brothers listened. 37:28 Then Midianite traders passed by; so the brothers pulled Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. And they took Joseph to Egypt. 37:29 Then Reuben returned to the pit, and indeed Joseph was not in the pit; and he tore his clothes. 37:30 And he returned to his brothers and said, "The lad is no more; and I, where shall I go?" 37:31 So they took Joseph's tunic, killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the tunic in the blood. 37:32 Then they sent the tunic of many colors, and they brought it to their father and said, "We have found this. Do you know whether it is your son's tunic or not?" 37:33 And he recognized it and said, "It is my son's tunic. A wild beast has devoured him. Without doubt Joseph is torn to pieces." 37:34 Then Jacob tore his clothes, put sackcloth on his waist, and mourned for his son many days. 37:35 And all his sons and all his daughters arose to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted, and he said, "For I shall go down into the grave to my son in mourning." Thus his father wept for him. 37:36 Now the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard.
